Mary Pope Osborne retells the opening portion of Homer's Odyssey in lively, child-friendly language, introducing readers to classical mythology, sea voyages, monsters, loyalty, cleverness, and the long pull of home. The episodic structure and energetic narration make it accessible to upper-elementary readers who are ready for mythology but may not yet want a full translation. It works well as a gateway to comparing retellings and discussing how heroes behave under pressure. Because it is adapted and divided into parts, some complexity and context are necessarily compressed, and readers must continue to later volumes for the broader arc.
