Oliver Jeffers offers a gentle, visually distinctive story about friendship, loneliness, responsibility, and the difficulty of letting go. The pared-back language makes the book accessible to beginning readers, while the expressive artwork adds emotional nuance and plenty to discuss. It works particularly well as a read-aloud, encouraging children to consider what friends need rather than simply what they want. The calm pacing and understated humor are appealing strengths. A mild limitation is that the central relationship’s emotional resolution is deliberately open-ended, so some children may want a more explicit explanation of the characters’ feelings.
