This opening Kane Chronicles adventure introduces Egyptian mythology through alternating sibling perspectives, combining humor, danger, and a strong emphasis on family bonds. Carter and Sadie’s contrasting voices make the story lively while also exploring grief, identity, and the challenge of learning to trust one another. The accessible explanations of mythology suit middle-grade readers who like fantasy, puzzles, and brisk action. Riordan’s imaginative world-building is a major strength. A mild drawback is that the frequent shifts in narration and large amount of background information may initially make the story feel crowded.
